When I heard the line-up of Pentagram, Satan’s Satyrs, Electric Citizen, and local support Righteous Bloom for a show in Philadelphia, I could not ask for a better set of bands. There’s quite a range there in the doom metal realm. And to top it off, the concert was at the Underground Arts in Philly, which has gradually become my favorite venue in the city. This was the third time I’ve seen the mighty ‘gram live, and damn do they put on a show. Maryland doom metal band Righteous Bloom formed from the marijuana ashes of Beelzefuzz last year. I had not listened to either band going into the show, so they were a complete unknown for me. I was pleasantly surprised in what I heard. There were only handful of people in the audience unfortunately, but they played their hearts out. The group had an interesting mix of heavy doom riffs with psyched-out melodies. Frontman Dana Ortt had an effect on his guitar making it sound like a keyboard, which I really dug. It added a unique layer to the band’s sound and gave their riffs an extra “umph”.
