Over the last few years, Blood Ceremony has become one of my favorite go-to bands on my iTunes. Their organ and flute-induced retro, doomy, folksy rock is uniquely appealing, as if Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull had a demonic baby. Maybe if Tony Iommi stayed in Tull for more than a few weeks, this could have happened. Their first two albums were stellar, and their third, The Eldritch Dark, is a nearly perfect record and my favorite release of 2013. Every song is catchy in its own wicked way and it flows so well. From the radio-friendly, yet villainous “Witchwood,” to the somber “Lord Summerisle,” and the devilish title track, this LP made me fall in love with the band. It represents the best of Occult Rock, this strange label of music that is somewhere in between doom metal, psychedelic rock, and early heavy metal. I was more than excited learning about the new record coming out soon. The follow-up to The Eldritch Dark has no doubt put some pressure on the band, after gradually gaining notoriety over the past ten years.
